Sleeping & Eating

Snow Hill 1

5 Palette American^ $$
(%410-632-0055; 104 W Market St; mains
$14-22; h11am-3pm Tue-Wed, to 9pm Thu-Sat,
10am-2pm Sun; v) An ever-shifting innovative
menu always keeps us guessing when it comes
to the Palette, yet we’re never disappointed with
whatever this excellent standby comes up with,
from gourmet grilled cheese to roasted quail or
lamb and pea risotto.

4 River House Inn B&B^ $$
(%410-632-2722; http://www.riverhouseinn.com;
201 E Market St; r $160-190, cottage $250-300;
paWs) The Victorian River House Inn
overlooks a breathtakingly pretty bend of the
Pocomoke River. The grounds are spacious and
beautiful; on a sunny day, or even blanketed
under the snow, this spot could remind one of
an English manor house, but the service and
friendliness are pure Eastern Shore laid back
(we mean that in a good way).

Berlin 2

5 Drummer’s Cafe American^ $$
(2 N Main St; lunch mains $9-14, dinner $17-34;
h11am-3pm & 5-10pm Mon-Sat, 10am-3pm
Sun) The dining room of the Atlantic Hotel is as
grand as the hotel itself, all big windows, natural
sunshine and – come evening – flickering
candlelight. The food references the best of
the Chesapeake; filet mignon gets even more
decadent with a crab cake, and the fish tacos
are fresh, citrus-y and superb.

5 Southside Deli Deli^ $
(%410-208-3343; 11021 Nicholas Ln #7;
mains under $10; h9am-9pm) The Southside
encapsulates the odd regional culinary
predilections of the area – a deli in a small,
seemingly Southern town that serves one
of the best Italian subs this side of New
York. Actually, any sandwich here is grand;
finish them off with cannolis imported from
Vaccaro’s, one of Baltimore’s most famous
Italian bakeries.

4 Atlantic Hotel Hotel $$
(%410-641-3589; http://www.atlantichotel.com; 2 N
Main St; r $115-245; pa) This handsome,
Gilded-era lodger gives guests the time-warp
experience but with modern amenities. It’s
centrally located within walking distance to
most of the best things that Berlin’s historic
downtown has to offer. The 18 rooms are
individually appointed, but they all blend
Victorian posh with Southern rustic charm.

Laurel 3

5 Laurel Pizzeria Italian $
(%302-877-0660; 411 N Central Ave; pizzas $6-17;
h11am-10pm Mon-Sat, to 9pm Sun) Nothing
anchors a small town like Laurel like an excellent
pizza place, so kudos to the Laurel Pizzeria. The
price is right too; at $6 for a small cheese pizza,
this is one budget slice of pie.

Georgetown 4

5 Restaurante Mi Laurita Latin^ $
(%302-856-3393; 10 N Race St; mains under
$10; h9am-10pm; p) Georgetown has a big
Latin American population, and this is where they
eat. Dishes are as cheap, delicious and fresh as
the best street food south of the border – that’s
a compliment. Give ‘em credit for serving tacos
de tripa (intestine tacos) – sounds funny to a
conservative palate, but delicious to anyone who
tries them.

Dover 5

5 Flavors of India Indian^ $$
(%302-677-0121; 348 N Dupont Hwy; $11-16;
h11am-10pm; pvc) To say this place is
an unexpected delight would be the grossest
understatement. First: it’s in a Super 8 Motel off
the highway. Second: it’s great. The standards –
vindaloos and kormas and tikka masalas – are
all wonderful, as are some new dishes. Goat
Palakwala? Goat curry with a spinach base.
Amazing. By far the best vegetarian option in
the area.
