Adaptational mirroring: Mirroring done intentionally
to put someone at ease, create discomfort, or otherwise ma-
nipulate the person’s emotions. (See Mirroring.)
Adaptors: Gestures to release stress, and to adjust the
body as a way to increase the comfort level.


Barriers: Postures and gestures we use when we are
uncomfortable.


Illustrators: Gestures used to punctuate a statement.
Microculture: A subset of culture that may be as small
as two people (for example, a married couple) or a large
group, such as Texans.


Mirroring: A natural response to another person; ges-
tures that reflect an attempt to assimilate.
Regulators: Gestures used to control another person’s
speech.
