Conflict postponed

The Munich Agreement, in which Britain
and France agreed to Nazi Germany’s
annexation of the Sudetenland from
Czechoslovakia, has come to be seen as
emblematic of the failures of appease-
ment. Its most visible symbol was the
piece of paper Neville Chamberlain held
aloft at Heston Aerodrome after arriving
back in Britain on 30 September 1938.
It was a document that carried both the
prime minister’s signature and that of

let alone “peace for our time”.
But has history been too harsh in its
judgment of Chamberlain? Could you not
argue he bought Britain time to prepare
for war? This is one of the ideas that
underpinned Robert Harris’s 2017 novel
Munich, which has now been adapted as
a feature-length drama that sees Jeremy
Irons bringing world-weary gravitas to
his role as Chamberlain.
George MacKay ( 1917 ) and Jannis
Niewöhner also star as Hugh Legat and
Paul von Hartmann, two men who were
friends at Oxford and now work for their
respective governments.
Amid the diplomatic back and forth,
the what-if idea that drives the plot
forward here is the notion that Munich
represented an opportunity to topple
Hitler from power.

Inventive type

The rise of typewriters transformed the
way we communicate, and the conse-
quences of this were felt across the
world. The devices became a staple of

ultimate emblem of working women,
adopted by secretaries worldwide.
These time-saving machines were also
invaluable to women who wanted to
start their own business ventures,

changing the landscape of work.
While in the 21st-century workplace
they’ve been usurped by computers,
typewriters are still lauded in the design
world for their timeless appearance.
A new exhibition charts the social

from the cumbersome early iterations
to sleek style icons.
