Several state parks in
southern Michigan will host

volunteer stewardship work-
days in January including the
Yankee Springs Recreation
Area.
The Yankee Springs event
will be held Jan. 30 from 10
a.m. until 1 p.m. Volunteers
should meet at the Deep
Lake mountain bike staging
area.
Volunteers must register
by emailing Emily at
[email protected].
Volunteers will take a
short hike to the Deep Lake
prairie fen where the plan is
to continue to remove inva-
sive shrubs to protect this
unique wetland. No experi-
ence is necessary, volunteers
will be trained to identify
target species.

    report.
    Assessor Report- None due to
    illness.

    Clerk Minutes of 11/16/2021;
    Motion by Knight, seconded by
    Buehler. All “Ayes.”
    Treasurer’s report was present-
    ed by Cross.
    Winter tax bills sent on
    11/30/2021 are due 2 /28/2022.
    Pay Bills $1935.76; seconded
    by Bass. Roll call, “Yes”, Bass,
    Knight, Buehler, Olson, Cross.
    Board Member Comments: Ol-
    son, ARPA funds are frustrating.
    They took the money from Social
    Security, and it belongs to the
    people who live here....
    Knight, Thornapple Ambulance
    Contract, attached. $4500 per
    year for ambulance coverage for
    the area that is presently covered
    by Birch. Birch would continue
    with the fire coverage; however,
    the ambulance would be cov-
    ered by Thornapple. Knight, so
    we would have Thornapple and
    Freeport as ambulance support.
    Buehler, “do you lose response
    time for the residents in that cor-
    ner?” Eaton, “yes. It may take two
    or three minutes more.” Knight,
    ”We did not look at the time dis-
    tance. We thought about it, but
    we did not do a study.” Buehler,
    the folks who work for Mercy and
    Thornapple all hold the same cer-
    tifications correct? Eaton, “Yes”
    Knight, “Mercy Ambulance
    want to change their contract
    dates to start on January, and not
    June. The Hastings City manager
    was at last Birch meeting and rec-
    ommended this change. In addi-
    tion, Mercy is looking to purchase
    new equipment and need to
    know their signed commitments.”
    Smelker, “there would be zero
    cost?” Knight, “correct.” Cross,
    “so how many people contacted
    you?” Knight, “a handful of peo-
    ple expressed concerns...”
    Bass, Motion to accept the
    ambulance contract from Thor-
    napple for a cost of $4500.00 a
    year. Roll call vote “Yes” Knight,
    Buehler, Bass, Cross. “No” Olson.
    Knight, start with a year con-


tract and see how it goes.
Records room update: Knight
talked to JD Forbes regarding
fireproof steel doors. His quote:
(2) two steel fireproof doors,
locks, hinges, seal and installed
for $2050. We received a bid, Eric
Mahler Remodeling, $12,480.
Mahler’s bid provided a complete
solution for a fireproof room, in-
cluding, blocking of two exterior
windows, block one interior door-
way, one (1) fireproof door, paint-
ing walls and epoxy floor treat-
ment. Board discussed bids and
tabled a decision to next month’s
meeting, January 18
Olson regarding mold in the
basement. Olson and Lorraine
Bush have cleaned basement
area; There is evidence of mold
from past water problems in the
basement.
Wood School and Eckert Road
Intersection. Even with road
strips, flags and signage, people
are running that Stop Sign. There
was another close call. Barry
County Road Commission has
made the decision to move for-
ward with a FOUR-WAY-STOP.
Land behind township hall dis-
cussed. $15,000 proposed by
seller. Buehler to follow-up to get
a square acre to match existing
property line.
Board discussed property at
the corner of Grange and Sis-
son and possible trade with an-
other piece of property north of
township hall building. Knight to
investigate and determine feasi-
bility.
Board discussed property at
Irving cemetery and the need to
secure property for future cem-
etery plots before it goes into
a farm preservation program.
Buehler to meet with Sexton and
landowner and provide update at
next meeting.
New Business:
5-year Mercy Contract. No dis-
cussion.
Carpet Cleaning not recom-
mended at this time as it is worn
out.
The Road Commission will at-
tend 1 /18/2022, meeting to give
annual road report.

A clear area for improve-
ment emerged as the Fighting
Scots looked at the data over
the holiday break.
They knew things had been
rough to start the second half
of ballgames through their
first four contests, and the
time away from competition
gave them a chance to look at
all the reasons why.
Caledonia’s varsity girls’

basketball team found some
answers and went on a 19-
run in the third quarter against
non-conference foe Hamilton
Tuesday and went on to a
48-33 win over the Hawkeyes
to move its record to 3-
overall this season heading
into the start of OK Red
Conference play last night
against Rockford.

bested in three contests


at Traverse City tourney


The Lowell/Caledonia/
Thornapple Kellogg
(LCTK) varsity hockey
team was bested in its three
games at the Traverse City
Tournament over the holi-
day break.
Traverse City Central
scored a 4-1 win over the
LCTK skaters in the tour-
nament opener Monday,
Dec. 27.
Traverse City Central
got two goals from Chase
Adams and one apiece
from Shea Harmeson and
Laiken Batcha in the con-
test, with assists from Tyler
Cooper, Owen Dawson,
Scott Barnhart and Koen
Burkholder.
LCTK managed just ten
shots on goal against TC
Central goalkeeper Brady
Faille.


The LCTK skaters were
back in action Dec. 29, fall-
ing 7-3 to the Bay Reps
varsity team.
Bay Reps got two goals
from Aaron Ackerson and
one each by Mason
Barnhard, Drew Hardy,
Thomas Boynton-Fisher
and Zander Griffore.
Tyeson Griffore had two
assists, as did Boynton-
Fisher. Grant Lucas
notched three assists for
their team.
In between those two
contests, the LCTK skat-
ers were bested by Toledo
St. John’s (OH) in the
first round of consola-
tion.
The championship of
the eight-team tourna-
ment went to Saginaw
Heritage, which bested

Toledo St. John’s and then
Traverse City Central to
reach the final against
Rockford.
Heritage bested the Rams
4-2 in the tournament
championship Dec. 29 with
James Mlejnek scoring
three times and Owen
Turner and Mason Cole
each earning three assists.
Heritage also got a goal
from Nolan Drapp in the
victory.
LCTK was scheduled
to host Forest Hills
Central last night at
Kentwood Ice Arena, and
will be home again this
afternoon, Jan. 8, against
East Grand Rapids at 3
p.m. LCTK will be at
Portage Northern Jan. 14
and at East Grand Rapids
Jan. 17.

Yankee Springs Recreation Area will be home to a Michigan DNR volunteer
stewardship workday Jan. 30 to remove invasive species from the Deep Lake
prairie fen.
