About the Translator
Shelley Frisch was born and educated in New York City. She
received a doctorate in Germanie languages and literatures from
Princeton University and has taught German literature, film studies,
and humanities at Columbia University, Haverford College, and
Rutgers University. Her scholarship on exile literature has been sup-
ported by the American Council of Learned Societies, the National
Endowment for the Humanities, the DAAD, and other granting insti-
tutions. She has served as executive editor of the Germanic Review
has won a prestigious journalism award. Her translations from
German into English include several books and numerous essays for
leading newspapers and journals. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey,
with her husband and their two sons.12
