God Talks to You With Words of
Confirmation
I rarely tell this story, mostly because it is so uncanny. But
anyone who is dating, single, or engaged loves to hear me
share the unusual way that God confirmed to me and Roger
that we were to get married. (There were many other words of
confirmation to us, but this one was the most exciting and fun.)
A little background is necessary.
Roger was my boss at Cleveland Campus Life/Youth for
Christ. He was thirty and I was twenty-two. I was newly sober,
a newly trained youth worker, and because I had such an
openly conversational relationship with God, I was always
asking God to talk to me or show me what I should do next. I
was often accused by more “mature” Christians of being too
childlike in my faith, possibly even exhausting God by talking
to Him about too many things—everything, anything, even
insignificant things. But Roger actually seemed to like this
about me! In fact, he often said that he “kept me around”
because of my faith.
By November 1977, it was becoming evident that my
relationship with Roger was changing from co-worker into
something more. We had never kissed or even dated, but we
