with the untamed enthusiasm of a woman who is about to
receive a marriage proposal! Roger, always more patient than
me, allowed the store owner to methodically show us dozens of
eyeglass frames. THEN we ran to the car and opened our
Bibles. Not knowing what we would find in the third chapter of
Colossians, I read out loud the first verse I turned to:


Therefore as God’s chosen, set apart and enjoying His love; clothe
yourself with tenderness of heart, kindliness, humility, gentleness,
patient endurance (v. 12).
Roger read aloud these verses to me:

Wives, be submissive to your husbands, as it is becoming in the Lord
to do. Husbands, love your wives (vv. 18–19).

A little embarrassed, we burst into laughter. Then suddenly
we felt the seriousness of the moment. We had asked God for a
Scripture confirmation—was this just a huge coincidence?
Roger was skeptical—or maybe he was just a little weak in the
knees. He expressed concern that this whole conversation was
moving too fast. I, on the other hand, was thrilled!


That night, alone in his apartment, Roger told God of his
concern. Then he turned to his favorite daily devotional, My
Utmost for His Highest, written by Oswald Chambers. It read:


“All things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans
8:28). The circumstances of a saint’s life are ordained of God. In the
life of a saint there is no such thing as chance. God by His
providence brings you into circumstances that you cannot
understand at all, but the Spirit of God understands.... Never put
your hand in front of the circumstances and say—I am going to be
my own providence here, I must watch this and guard that. All your
circumstances are in the hand of God; therefore never think it is
