- Before the influx of Muslims into the West and the concomitant one-sided
violence from them, people in the West were free to draw Mohammed or
criticise Islam in any way they saw fit. By contrast, nearly a century
before the Mohammed cartoon controversy erupted in Denmark, in 1929
in India a publisher was assassinated by a Muslim for publishing a
cartoon about Mohammed. In the wake of the assassination of the staff of
Charlie Hebdo by devout Muslim terrorists, the “progressive” New
Republic, which claims to “challenge the status quo” reminded its readers
