- In his book on the devout Muslims who destroyed the World Trade
Center in September 2001, Terry McDermott says:
It is hard to appreciate how much time these young men spent
thinking, talking, arguing, and reading about Islam. It became for some of
them nearly the only thing they did. Some of the men in the group later
met frequently in the backroom of a [Muslim] bookstore near Al Quds
[Mosque in Hamburg]. There they listened to audiotaped sermons and
jihad chants. One sample lyric: “When I die as a martyr, I die as a better
human being”. Terry McDermott, Perfect Soldiers – The Hijackers: Who
They Were, Why They Did It, New York, 2005, p.49.
When one looks at the nationalities of those involved in the Hamburg
group and the 9/11 attacks, one sees that the former came from around
twenty different Islamic countries, whilst those who actually carried out
the attacks were mostly from Saudi Arabia. ↵
