- Efraim Karsh (2007) Islamic Imperialism: a History, London, p.18. In
2012 when the British Museum had an exhibition on the pilgrimage to
Mecca called ‘the Hajj’, many shocked visitors were taking photographs
of a huge motorway sign, which showed that only Muslims were allowed
into the city of Mecca, with the Kuffar being directed to by-pass Mecca
(the indigenous Pagans of Mecca cannot return, the Jews of Medina
cannot enter that city, atheists, Buddhists, Christians are also banned from
these cities). The exhibition contained several items relating to the
explorer Richard Burton’s covert trip to Mecca. Not one of the signs
informed the public that if Burton had been caught and exposed as a
Kuffar, he would have been executed. ↵
