- One can compare a few verses from the Rodwell translation with those
“improvements” which came later. Here is Rodwell:
9:28 O Believers! only they who join gods with God are unclean! Let
them not, therefore, after this their year, come near the sacred Temple.
9:29 Make war upon such of those to whom the Scriptures have been
given as believe not in God, or in the last day, and who forbid not that
which God and His Apostle have forbidden, and who profess not the
profession of the truth, until they pay tribute out of hand, and they be
humbled.
9:30 The Jews say, “Ezra (Ozair) is a son of God”; and the Christians
say, “The Messiah is a son of God.” Such the sayings in their mouths!
They resemble the saying of the Infidels of old! God do battle with them!
How are they misguided!
Compare the above with the same verses from the later, “improved”
Pickthall translation:
9.28 O ye who believe! The idolaters only are unclean. So let them
[the non-Muslims] not come near the Inviolable Place of Worship
[Mecca] after this their year.
9.29 Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as
believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah
hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the Religion of Truth,
until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.
9.30 And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians
say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying with their
mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old. Allah
(Himself) fighteth against them. How perverse are they!
The Rodwell translation makes it clear that Christians (who believe
Jesus is part of the trinity which composes their God) would be included
among the idolaters (the unclean), whilst the Pickthall translation conceals
this.
It should be immediately obvious that the translation by Pickthall. the
convert to Islam who showed every sign of being a traitor to Britain, does
what it can to conceal that Islam is a religion of war. For example, in 9:29
