lie which makes no sense in the light of Muslim terrorist
attacks like 9/11, or the Madrid bombing, or the 7/7
bombing, or the beheading of soldier Lee Rigby, or the
Kenya shopping mall attack, or the Paris attacks, or the
attack in Brussels, or the Dhaka massacre? The Grand Lie
succeeds because our conception of religion does not
encompass the idea of a supremacist ideology that will
murder and enslave all those who do not join in with its
attempt to dominate the world. In the West we are so
accustomed to the idea that all religions are something like
Christianity (a natural assumption for people who do not
spend their lives immersed in the study of world religions),
that we simply do not have the mental framework to grasp
the idea of Islam-the-Religion-of-War. Our minds are
receptive to the idea of a religion extolling peace (even if
its adherents fail to live up to this principle) that we
cannot make sense of the idea of a religion dedicated to
war. It seems to be a contradiction in terms, like a round
square. And it is this inability to comprehend the true
nature of Islam which the elite exploit. Instead of
explaining that this religion of war is not really a religion
in our sense of the word, the elite instead exploit our
incomprehension to pretend that there is no basis for
warfare and murder in Islam, and that the jihadis are not
“real Muslims”, when according to the core texts of Islam
the jihadis are the only true believers. Accepting that Islam
is a religion of war is such a horrendous idea to most of us,
The Grand Lie persists because we do not want to believe
that Islam is intrinsically violent and will be a relentless
problem for our secular liberal democracies. Accepting the
