On one hand, Aliyu Abubakar Sanyinna, the attorney
general of Nigeria’s Sokoto state, defended the sentence: ‘‘It
is the law of Allah. By executing anybody that is convicted
under Islamic law, we are just complying with the laws of
Allah, so we don’t have anything to worry about.’’[59] On
the other hand, the Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony
Olubunmi Okogie, offered to be stoned to death in Huseini’s
place.



  1. Why do observant Muslim women wear
    fullcovering clothing?


Muslim women who go outside their houses must be
covered in order to show that they are believers, guarding
their modesty and displaying their beauty only to their
husbands: ‘‘O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and
the believing women, that they should cast their outer
garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most
convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not
molested’’ (Sura 33:59).


They should cast these outer garments over their entire
person: ‘‘Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, entered upon the
Apostle of Allah wearing thin clothes. The Apostle of Allah
turned his attention from her. He said: ‘O Asma, when a
woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her
that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and
he pointed to her face and hands.’ ’’[60] While full body
covering was never required of Christian women, it is only
recently that Christian society has lost all respect for the
virtue of female (and, for that matter, male) modesty in
