English clubs believe they can fulfil
their European Cup fixtures in France
this weekend, but the round is still
shrouded in uncertainty.
Sale Sharks, Newcastle Falcons and
Bath will not travel under France’s
present rules for arrivals, which require
visitors to self-isolate for 48 hours and
exit that quarantine only after a nega-
tive PCR Covid-19 test result.
The sides are concerned players and
staff could be stuck in the country for at
least ten days if they test positive there,
so want testing rules to be dropped.
Despite a lack of official confirmation
there is confidence that regulations will
be relaxed in time for the weekend’s
Heineken Champions Cup and Chal-
lenge Cup fixtures.
At Sale, the director of rugby, Alex
Sanderson, was convinced his side
would play Clermont Auvergne on Sun-
day. “We’re going,” he said yesterday.
“From my understanding, we don’t have
to stay the 48 hours or PCR test which
was the worry because people would
probably have got trapped in France.
“On the back of all the communica-
tion we’ve had thus far, we are very
‘We’re going’ – English clubs
optimistic on French matches
Will Kelleher
Deputy Rugby Correspondent
positive that it’s going to happen, have
chartered a plane and sorted the hotel.
It might still need to be made official,
but all the communication we’ve had
suggests it’s happening.”
Government-level discussions con-
tinued last night, and when contacted
by The Times, the tournament organis-
ers, European Professional Club Rugby
(EPCR), said in a statement: “It is hoped
that the matches in round three and
four will be played in more favourable
conditions, and EPCR expects an
update on the situation shortly.”
While all clubs are rolling with the
punches Covid is throwing at them,
they are frustrated they still lack clarity,
with matches kicking off from tomor-
row night and money on the line.
Bristol Bears, who play Stade Fran-
çais on Saturday, lost more than
£300,000 with two consecutive Euro-
pean Cup cancellations before Christ-
mas. “It is not until I see them at the
ground that I know it’s going ahead,”
Pat Lam, the Bears director of rugby,
said. “It is all very well saying at the last
minute the game doesn’t happen but
there is a cost.”
Rob Baxter, the Exeter Chiefs direct-
or of rugby, called for more transparen-
cy, with his side playing Montpellier
next week. “Of course we all want clari-
ty, but I can’t give you an answer
because we haven’t got any,” he said.
“You’ve got team managers across the
Premiership on the phone saying, ‘Can
we hold the plane? Can we hold the
hotel?’ We keep being told there is a
meeting every day about it, but we’re
yet to hear an outcome.
“We’ve got our concerns for next
week and we’ve still got ten days. What
it must be like if you’ve got two, I don’t
know. It must be terrible.”
At Northampton Saints, who host
Ulster on Sunday then play Racing 92
in Paris the following weekend, their
chief executive, Mark Darbon, said: “It
is challenging. We have made selection
decisions for this weekend not knowing
what our trip to France may look like
the week after.”
Sale hope to fly out on Saturday,
returning on Sunday, Bath have a char-
ter plane booked for today and Newcas-
tle will leave tomorrow morning to play
Biarritz that evening.
But there are still issues — for Sale
and Bath in particular — as they wait
for Schengen visa approval for their
South African players, who also have
different Covid passes required for
entry into France.

‘Barbeary’s done enough for England spot’
Alfie Barbeary, the Wasps No 8, is ready
to be included in England’s Six Nations
squad after a series of eye-catching
performances, according to Lee Black-
ett, the Wasps head coach.
Having overcome a run of serious
injuries, Barbeary, 21, has made a signif-
icant impact with his ball-carrying and
defensive strength coupled with an
ability to jackal possession at the break-
down. Eddie Jones, the England head
coach, will name his Six Nations squad
on Tuesday and has a host of back-row
options, but Blackett is adamant that
his man is ready for a first cap, having
opted to switch from hooker to No 8.
Jones named Barbeary in the 33-man
squad for the Autumn Nations Cup
final against France in December 2020
having noted the youngster’s appetite
for hard work and willingness to take
on any challenge.
“I would like to think that Alfie
has done enough [to be selected],”
Blackett. said “There is still more in
Alfie and we will need to see consisten-
cy week in, week out but everyone is
taking note of the potential he has got
and he is only going to get better. I hope
there are a few Wasps players in
the squad.”
