Feeling cool

Abdel Abdulai takes to
the streets to shoot simple
and effective fashion

1

Learn about light
The use of natural light is important
when you shoot high-street fashion:
factors such as time of day will play an
important role in your image. A morning
shot will have a cooler feel, whereas
an afternoon shot will produce a
warmer, more intense image.

Shape your light
Whether it’s natural or handheld,
you should use a reflector. To create
shadows, place your subject away
from the light; you can add some light
underneath your subject by using
walls or pavements as reflectors.

2

Choose the correct
lens for the job
Your lens choice is as important as
the light: you want something that is
sharp and fast to focus and that has
a reasonable depth of field. My main
two choices are the 50mm f/1.4 and
the 70-200mm f/2.8. Both provide
a pleasing shallow depth of field.

5

Build a connection
Comfort and rapport are important
to success. In order to capture that
eye-catching shot, you need to make
your subject comfortable. Talk to them,
compliment them, make them laugh, or
direct them if they are not posing right,
and you will get the best out of them.

Scout for locations
Your location, and the choice of
background it offers, are important
elements of the shoot. To help your
image stand out, make sure that
the background you’re shooting
does not clash with the clothes
your subjects are wearing.
