PINPOINT LOCATION
HOW TO GET TO THE SAME
SPOT EVERY TIME

PHOTOPILLS
The PhotoPills
app has a Planner
mode that allows
you to drop a pin on your
specific location, then
visualise the angle of the sun
throughout the day so you
know where to be for the best
light at sunrise and sunset.
It can be handy for working
out where would be best
to take your first photo.

WHAT 3 WORDS
If you use the What
3 Words app, you
can get a three-
word combination completely
unique to the location you’re
standing in for every three-
metre square, making it easy
to trace your steps back to
the exact location where
you took your first image.
It’s available for free on
Android and iOS.

GET SET UP

1

Once you’ve found
a location for a
landscape that you’d
like to shoot, set up
your camera on a tripod
so you can compose. It
can be handy to make
a note of how tall the
tripod is, and find a
specific marker like
a fence post that you
can make a note of to
return to, for identical
framing on each visit.

SETTINGS

2

It’s important
to use the same
aperture value for each
shot so that the depth
of field looks identical
between them. We
used Aperture Priority
and set the aperture to
f/5.6 and ISO to 400.
Using a tripod, we then
let the camera work
out the correct shutter
speed for each of the
four separate images.

TAKE THE SHOT

3

As we used a tripod,
we switched off
Image Stabilisation and
also enabled the self-
timer to avoid knocking
the camera by accident
when we pressed the
shutter. We focused
on the tree in all four
shots so it was pin-sharp
and the clear focal
point, and we ensured
the composition was
identical for each image.

FRESH PHOTO IDEAS FOR 2022

Start a New Year photo

project to stay active

Take pictures of the same scenic view throughout the year to capture the
changing seasons, then combine the best ones in a grid for printing

etting yourself a
year-long photo
project is a great
way of keeping
active with your
camera. Whether it’s the
challenge of photographing
a single theme, such as
reflections or shots taken in the
golden hour, or different wildlife
throughout the year, it’s a great
way to learn new skills and add
extra images to your portfolio.
In 2021, we set ourselves the
challenge of photographing the

same landscape scene from
an identical perspective
throughout the year, so we
could clearly display a series of
pictures together to show four
distinctly different seasons.
We’re happy with how it turned
out, although we’re hoping for
more snow this year – and the
odd spell of lightning might
add some extra drama to
our spring quadrant.
We explain how it’s done and
tips we’ve learnt along the way
so you can try it out for yourself.
