Cut out
the subject
Harmonization Filter
only works when you
have a document with two or
more layers, and the currently
selected layer must have areas
of transparency or a Layer Mask.
To begin the process, open the
image you want to cut out then
click the lock on the layer to
unlock it. Go to Window >
Properties, then click the
Remove Background button.

Select a layer
After you open the
Harmonization Filter,
click the dropdown
menu and choose the layer that
you’d like your current layer to
match. After a few seconds while
the filter analyses the content of
the layers, the current layer will
change to match the target layer.
Here it’s tackled the mismatch
between the blue-tinged subject
and the backdrop by shifting the
hues towards green and yellow.

Perfect
the comp
The images are now
likely to match more
closely than before, but it’s worth
perfecting the tones. One simple
way to make two or more images
look like they belong is to add a
tonal effect on top of everything.
For a quick tonal change, merge
a copy of the layers with Ctrl/Cmd
+Shift+Alt+E then go to Filter >
Camera Raw Filter. Experiment
with Profiles in the Basic Panel.

2

Start the filter
Go to Filter > Neural
Filters and turn on
Harmonization. (If it’s
your first time using the filter
you’ll need to download it first.)
Harmonisation is in the Beta
Filters section: it’s not the finished
product yet, so there may be bugs
to fix and improvements to make
before Adobe eventually adds it
to the Featured section above.
You can provide feedback on the
Beta Neural Filters by using the
Satisfied buttons at the bottom.

Choose
an output
The Output option lets
you choose to output
the effect on the current layer,
as a new layer or as a Smart
Filter, which lets you adjust the
settings at any point. The New
Layer option is also helpful: it
allows you to reduce the overall
strength of the effect by reducing
the layer opacity; or to change
how it blends with the layers
below by, for example, using
the Color Blending Mode.

Fine-tune
the settings
These sliders let you
control the strength
of the overall effect or shift the
colours. The Harmonization Filter
can initially be a bit heavy-handed
so we find it’s best to reduce
Strength. Drop it down to zero,
then gradually increase it until
you hit upon the correct amount.
The initial effect is also slightly
too dark over the face here, but
we can increase Brightness
to improve things.
