Process a winter sun

Use Lightroom to tackle exposure challenges

in photos taken as the sun sets

Remove dust

Sensor dust is a real bane.
Spot Removal (press Q)
makes easy work of it, but
even with the overlay for
showing spots (press A), it
doesn’t show everything. One
helpful tip is to raise Dehaze
to 100, which shows the dust
more clearly. Simply reset
Dehaze when you’re done.

ith the shorter days during winter, it’s easier
to catch the sun at both ends of the day. If
you’re lucky enough to have somewhere
local with a view, there’s more opportunity
to create a set of photos showing everything
the sky has to offer, using a range of focal lengths to
maximise the variety in the scene.
For me, that location is Ballyloughane Beach, which looks
towards the Clare Hills and Galway Bay. The main view of the
bay is blocked by Mutton Island and the causeway that leads
to it. At this time of year, walking along the beach allows you
to position the fading sun right behind the island’s lighthouse.
While people love taking that final sun photo, it’s often the
time after the sun has set that yields the best shot. Stay for
a while after sunset, and you could be rewarded with great
photos. Even if you don’t have high clouds for epic views
with a wide-angle lens, a tighter shot can still yield
gorgeous results. Get the shot – then it’s time to edit...
