Shootout

Check those conditions

When the success of an outdoor shoot
relies on certain conditions and light,
it pays to check these before you head
out. As well as looking at the weather,
Liz uses an app The Photographer’s
Ephemeris, which shows where the
sunlight will fall at a chosen location
and day. If your spot is affected by the
tides, check the times of those, too.

Zoom in to fill the frame

Chloé has chosen to stay back from her
subject and shoot at the long end of her
telephoto lens. This will separate your
model from the background, and the blur
of the wall in the foreground creates a
sense of depth. Maintaining good eye
contact with your subject when using
a telephoto lens can be difficult, but
Chloé has nailed it perfectly.

Challenge 1
Chloé Brown

ur first shooting
challenge will see Chloé
and Gabriela capture a
fashion shot of Hannah,
a staff writer on the Digital Camera
World website. Hannah is happy on
either side of a camera; like all good
models, she poses instinctively and
barely needs any direction.
“I definitely ventured beyond my
comfort zone on this Shootout,” says
Chloé. “I considered whether to keep
this image or not. My main reason for
keeping it is Hannah’s hair covering the
rest of her facial features and drawing
focus to her eyes. During editing,
I desaturated the greens from the
trees behind Hannah to make her
stand out from the background.”

Expert opinion

Fashion images are all about breaking
the mould, and Chloé has done that
with aplomb by embracing the
elements, and shooting as the wind
blows across Hannah’s face. The
direction from Chloé for Hannah’s
pose is good, too. We’d encourage
photographers to watch the framing
of shots like this, so that parts of the
body like fingers aren’t cropped out.
