Shootout

Details, details...

Fashion is primarily all about
showing off clothes. Gabriela
decided to pick out some key
elements of Hannah’s outfit to
create a small double image.
Again, choosing not to shoot
wide-open has ensured that
the details in the image have
remained sharp throughout.

Challenge 1
Gabriela
Straczynska

abriela was no
less quick out
of the blocks than
Chloé for our first
challenge. She works quickly,
and no doubt relished having
a subject she could direct – quite
a contrast from taking photos of
music events, where anticipation
is a key part of the craft.
“I wanted to create an untold
story about the clothing that a
viewer would be curious about,”
says Gabriela, “by shooting
Hannah from a high angle and
positioning her in the centre,
but cutting off some parts of
the body and clothing from the
frame. I also asked Hannah to
pose unevenly with her head
tilted and eyes closed, with only
one earring on show, and her
hands not visible. I did this to
draw the viewer’s eyes to the
central part of the frame, which
is just a white top. To see the rest
of the clothing, the viewer will
have to look at the other photos
taken during the shoot.”

Expert opinion

Taking risks with tricky poses
can go one way or another, but
this one has led to a cool shot
of Hannah. Gabriela has made
the most of a very limited
environment – it just proves
that you can get decent results
with a simple setup and a good
rapport with your model. Not
shooting wide-open means that
Hannah is completely in focus.
