Challenge 3
Chloé Brown

or our third and
final round, our
participants will
shoot an image
for conversion into
black and white later on. Chloé
has returned to where it all began
on the day, with another take on
Hannah leaning against a wall
in the lobby of the Moxy Hotel.
“For this image, I wanted
to put more of the focus on
Hannah than the colours
surrounding her,” Chloé explains.
“Like the previous image shot
in the same location, I used the
wallpaper’s design to create a
leading line directed towards
Hannah. During editing, I pulled
the highlights in her eyes to make
them pop, so that they become
the main focus of the image.”

Expert opinion

Another example of what can
be achieved when using a long
lens for portraiture. Some
viewers may suggest the bright
highlights in the background are
distracting, but others may say
they add to the scene instead.

Focus on other elements

Introducing hands or props to fashion
portraits can produce some tricky framing
challenges, but this image by Chloé works
really well. “I love the way Hannah’s hands
are positioned – they lead you towards her
eyes, which I always try and make my main
focus point. To draw attention to Hannah’s
face, as this shot was overexposed, I also
pulled some of the highlights down.”
