iven how well
modern cameras
capture colour,
why would anyone
think that discarding it could
make for a better photo? Well,
here’s a rebuttal of that view.
Gabriela’s portrait on page 89
is not lacking a vibrant colour
palette, but this black-and-white
conversion is mesmerising. It’s a
testament to the magic of mono,
and why it will always endure.
“I framed my subject from a
low-angle perspective, so I could
portray the fashion angle from
a marketing point of view,” says
Gabriela. “I was interested in how
Hannah’s shoes and suit would
be viewed through the eyes of a
potential client if they happened
to be sitting opposite the model.
“It’s a different technique from
what you see in e-commerce
photography, but it brings more
emotional connection.”

Expert opinion

Gabriela’s excellent framing
uses Hannah’s boots to draw us
into the image, and her superbly
executed black-and-white
conversion keeps us there.

How low can you go?

Getting low to the ground and shooting
through the foliage has created a strong
fashion image here. Gabriela tended to put
her model in an interesting position, or put
herself in one – in limited surroundings like
these, one has to make the camera work
harder to produce strong images. Good
control of light has retained detail in the
brighter sky and Hannah’s darker outfit.
