CONVERSATION

Nike Air Jordan XI Adapt

Standing on the Bowflex Max Trainer M
might make you feel like you’re wearing an
exoskeleton without going anywhere, but
this home gym machine is designed for
all-body workouts despite taking up a
fraction of the space needed for most
ellipticals and treadmills.
You see, with Covid-19 tiers and lockdowns,
and the general ongoing annoyance of
other people, building a home gym and
cancelling your fitness club membership
has become quite appealing. You may have
noticed that the Max Trainer M8 is hardly
a cost equivalent to that £30 direct debit
(even if you can get a lower-spec model
for nearer a grand), but it’s in Peloton and
Wattbike territory.
There’s Bluetooth to connect to your phone
or tablet, and from there pick from two
Bowflex apps – one for tailored workouts
with coaches, one that lets you visit exotic
virtual locations for a backdrop guaranteed
to beat the wall of your garage. You just
need to buy into the benefits of doing the
equivalent of climbing loads of stairs like
Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 2.

While Nike has used its Adapt auto-lacing
technology on a number of trainers now,
this is the first time it’s found its way onto
a pair of Air Jordans. With this updated
version of the classic Jordan XI basketball
shoe, you can electronically engage wires
to toggle the perfect fit through Nike’s
Adapt app or by pressing buttons on the
midsole – although you might want to wait
until half-time, or the end of a quarter,
or a time out, or that bit when blokes
on trampolines come out, to avoid any
mid-game madness.
Nike says the wonderfully named Tinker
Hatfield, who designed the original Jordan
XI, showed in his initial 1995 sketches that
he wanted the sneaker to be laceless from
the beginning; but it’s fair to say this
version, celebrating the shoe’s 25th
anniversary, has divided opinion. The
Adapt app gets a ‘Jordan-flavoured’
interface plus the ability to set several
preset fits (in case you plan on changing
feet), customise the lights in the midsole
and check power levels.
Bagging a pair is going to be tough, but if
you fancy your chances they’re available
through Nike’s SNKRS app and storefront.
