FIRST TEST APPLE WATCH SERIES 6

Are you reddy for love?

Design-wise nothing much has
changed, and that’s fine by us, but
it’s in the wardrobe department
where things get exciting: the S6
has some fresh threads, namely
blue and (Product) Red aluminium
models. New Solo Loop straps
also eliminate fastenings.

Rocket scan

The new S6 chip is based on the
A13 Bionic of the iPhone 11 and
is claimed to be 20% faster than
the last one. Apps certainly launch
more speedily, and the Watch’s
ability to go from flat to full in an
hour and a half is great given it’s
now joining us in bed.

Snore song

The headline feature is the ability
to measure blood oxygen (see
panel), but there’s a new heart-
rate sensor and sleep tracking
too. It’s interesting to see where
your heart rate dips and rises
at night, but we’d like a bit more
detail on the quality of our kip.

Handle in the wind

GPS is swift and cyclists will love
being fed proper routes, while
watchOS 7 also tracks VO2 Max...
without quite offering the detail
you’ll get from a serious fitness
tracker. Don’t discount the
altimeter either. It’s a bit niche,
but a boon for hikers.

I’m still outstanding

It’s the simple stuff that’s always
made the Watch such a catch,
especially for iPhone users – and
synchronicity is as seamless as
it’s always been, with generous
levels of personalisation for your
notifications. Still no third-party
watch faces, though.

Out in the cats-and-dogs rain, I’m
thankful it’s water-resistant to 50m.

It certainly feels quick, and watchOS 7
has ironed out the odd kink.

It’s as pretty as ever. Glad to see
they haven’t messed with the looks. No need to fiddle about with this new strap – I shall rename it Hands Solo.

Setup with an iPhone seems simple,
but I haven’t got to the sensors yet.All the usual features are here: activity rings, steps, calories, fall detection...

...not to mention menstrual tracking
and monitoring of LOUD NOISES.

Siri’s even had a brain boost. You can
raise your wrist and ask a question.

I now know that ‘Jeg elsker ost’ is
‘I love cheese’ in Norwegian.
