GROUP TEST WEIRD WORKOUTS

HANGIN’ TOUGH
No matter h ow
fit you think you
are, minor strap
adjustments are all
it takes to leave you
broken on the floor.

SPACE RAIDERS
This one isn’t ideal
for small spaces:
you need at least
2m height and
width to get the
most out of it.

What’s the story?
When it comes to suspension
training, TRX has a huge
market share through the
world’s CrossFit gyms and
other sweat-based torture
chambers. Those in the know
will recognise the trademark
black and yellow straps...
and understand they mean
shaking arms and a beast of
a bodyweight workout.
This is the entry-level TRX
system and comes with a
one-size-fits-all adjustable
strap with padded handles
and foot straps plus anchors

for attaching to posts, trees
or doors. You also get a poster
with various workouts, while
the TRX app comes with a
lifetime’s worth of targeted
and full-body workouts.

Is it any good?
Suspension training is a tried
and tested way to build muscle,
help stabilise joints and blitz
fat. It’s extremely easy to
adjust the difficulty of the
exercises, so no matter how
fit you get – and if you stick
with a program you certainly
will get stronger – it’ll always

be able to get you begging for
mercy. In a good way.
It took us a good week of
workouts to get the hang of
adjusting the straps and not
feeling too daft with feet
suspended and pathetic
core shuddering; but because
each exercise is scalable and
uses your own bodyweight,
you never feel out of our
depth. Progression is quick
too, making each workout
harder once you’ve got the,
er, hang of it.
Our only issue, in fact, wa s
finding a space to hang the

straps. While reassuringly
secure, the door anchor
felt too low for some of the
exercises, and spreading both
arms wide proved an issue
indoors – which was a shame
as we didn’t feel confident
enough to head to the park
and strap onto a tree for a
public session. Still, give it
six months and a well-earned
six-pack, and we might revise
that decision.
