IT CAN PATROL

THE HOUSE FOR

FIVE MINUTES

BEFORE NEEDING

TO REFUEL

$250 / ring.com

What, in the name of all that is
holy, is that?
Well, if you were already starting
to get concerned about security
cameras, video doorbells and
smart home displays invading
your own privacy, you ain’t seen
nothing yet... because hovering on
the horizon and waiting to patrol
your corridors is Ring’s impossibly
futuristic Always Home Cam: a
security drone that lives inside
your house.

Right, well that’s creepy as hell.
But also pretty cool, admit it. The
Always Home Cam is capable
of flying for five minutes before
needing to refuel, so all but the
biggest gaffs should be covered
by your own personal airborne
sentry, and it’ll make enough noise
when in flight to ensure it doesn’t
sneak up on you getting out of
the shower. Because, presumably,
even Ring doesn’t want to see
your ri... you get the picture.

What about when it’s grounded
and not making any noise?
Worried about being spied on
while the Always Home Cam isn’t
in flight? Impossible. Its charging
dock physically blocks off the
camera lens when it’s on terra
firma. Most of the time it’ll be
sitting peacefully in that dock,
though it’ll spring into action if
it’s alerted by a paired Ring Alarm
and needs to investigate using its
built-in 1080p camera.

But it’s going to scare the children!
Maybe, but consider the benefits
of having your own hall monitor to
check whether they’ve brushed
their teeth, as well as periodically
embarking on a preset surveillance
route around your house. There’s
no word on UK availability yet; but
if you are concerned about a robot
invasion, that five-minute flight
time means there’s little danger
of an army of them making their
own way across the Atlantic.
