FIRST TEST AMAZON ECHO SHOW 10

Pivot away

The Echo Show’s brushless
motor allows it to spin 175° in
either direction, so it can always
face you when you address it.
It’s a tablet with a pretty sizeable
bezel, plus a front mic and a 13MP
front camera – with multiple ways
to disable it if you want to.

Let’s twist again

If you’re into your eco-friendly
gadgets, the Echo Show 10 is
built using 30% post-consumer
recycled plastics, and entirely
recycled fabric and aluminium.
Low-power mode will turn the
screen off intelligently during
periods of inactivity.

You’re a big twirl now

It’s worth noting this is quite a bit
taller than the 2018 Echo Show 10.
We know this because we can no
longer open the kitchen cupboard,
plus it requires extra space for
rotating. But in either charcoal
or white, we like its (whisper it)
Apple-like appearance.

Pirouette dream

Using computer vision and
echolocation to track where you
are, the processing is done locally
and deleted after each interaction.
It works really well most of the
time: smooth, silent and rarely
unable to locate you. It also works
as a smart security cam.

You reely got me

Setup requires Device Mapping
to determine the range of motion,
then works like this: say the wake
word and the screen swivels to
face you and will then follow your
movements whether you’re on
a video call, following a recipe or
watching Netflix or Prime Video.

24 hours with
the Amazon
Echo Show 10

Swivelling is silent, and a message
pops up when you’re out of the zone.

The black camera lens really stands
out. You know you’re being watched.

Amazon devices are getting prettier,
even if this one has put on weight.

It demands a fair bit of space, and
needs ample room to rotate.

Adding it to the Alexa app and picking
the content you want is easy as ever.

Ah, there’s a camera on/off button
and a cover to stop the snooping.

Device Mapping is quick, but we have
to repeat it every time we move it.

It’s collided with something; Alexa
tells me to move it. Borderline rude.

Motion is on by default, so I’ve just
screamed “Alexa, stop following me!”
