VERSUS PET-FRIENDLY VACS

● You can stash
the Dyson in a dark
corner and juice it
up just by plugging
in the charger, or
use the included
docking station – a
plastic mount that
screws to the wall.
The battery can
also be unclipped
for charging off the
vac; or if you fancy
a tidier solution with
space to hang all
your attachments,
the free-standing
Floor Dok is an
extra £100.

● The Samsung
comes with a
free-standing
Z Station charging
dock. You can clip
all the attachments
to the back while
the vac is getting
fuelled up, and
there’s even a
slot in the base
for charging a spare
battery at the same
time. This is a great
way to double the
device’s run time...
except that a
second battery
costs £149.

What’s the story?
The Pet version of Samsung’s Jet 90 stick
echoes the basic ‘elongated plasma rifle’
form of the V11, but dispenses with the
striking colours for a look that’s less Doom,
more dining room. As with the Dyson,
the long tubular section is removable for
close-quarters action, but here it’s also
telescopic, while the extendable crevice
tool gives you a few more inches to reach
those gruesome cornice cobwebs.
Just as before, there’s no real difference
between this and the standard model
except for the absence of one attachment
(a sort of electric mop) and a £50 saving.

Is it any good?
Honestly, we could vacuum Buckingham
Palace three times with each of these
machines (mind your feet, ma’am) and not
be able to pick a winner in terms of overall
performance. It’s all about the suction, and
they’re both really good at it.
What does become apparent quite
quickly, however, is that the Samsung
is a little less tiring to use. It’s lighter, and
there’s no trigger to keep squeezing – just
a simple stop/start button to press once
and forget. The only real drawback is that
the bin is a fair bit smaller and doesn’t have
the Dyson’s auto-emptying trick, so you’ll
have to tip it out manually. You grotty serf.

Not as desirable as the Dyson, but just about
edges it on the practicalities

What’s the story?
Do you like cable-free liberty but think the
whole idea of robot vacuum cleaners is
fundamentally stupid? Do you have a hairy
animal living in your house? Then you need
a cordless stick vac with enough slurping
power to pull great clumps of fur out of
your carpet fibres – and Dyson’s vibrantly
sexy V11 Animal is the obvious choice.
Squeezing all the brand’s famed suction
skills into a device that’s portable enough
to swing around the house like a big copper
sword, this is basically the standard V11
without the high-torque head for £50 less...
but there’s no need to tell the dog that.

Is it any good?
Once fully charged, the V11 Animal is let
loose on a rug that’s popular with both
a moulting dog and a long-haired cat. The
fact that its 0.76-litre bin is filled to the
‘max’ mark within about 40 seconds tells
us three things: it’s a mighty strong sucker,
stick vacs will always have to sacrifice a
little dust-storage capacity for portability,
and that rug was a disgrace.
Luckily, Dyson’s clever ‘point and shoot’
emptying mechanism means it’s no bother
at all to dump a load and get back to work.
Five attachments, including a soft brush
for fragile areas, ensure every inch of the
home is quickly and thoroughly de-fluffed.
