All these men were captured or killed during the battle of Badr. One
Qurays h leader named in this curse, ' Uqba, pleade d for his life, "But who
will look after my children, 0 Muhammad?"
"Hell," responded the Prophet of Islam, andordered'Uqba killed.'

The bodies of all those named in the curse were thrown into a pit. As
an eyewitn ess recall ed, "Later on I saw all of them killed during the battle
of Badr and their bodie s were thro wn into a well exce pt the body of
Umaiya or Ubai, because he was a fat man, and when he was pulled, the parts
of his body got separated before he was thrown into the well."' Then
Muhammad taunted themas"people of the pit" and posed a theological
question: "Have you found what God promised you is true? I have foundthat
what my Lord promised me is true." When asked why he was speaking to
dead bodi es, he replied ; "You cann ot hear what I say bette r than they,
but they cannot answer me,"

Muhammad even claimed that armies of angels joined with the Muslimsto
smite the Quraysh—and that similar help would come in the future to
Muslims who remained faithful to Allah: "Allah had helped you at Badr,
when ye were a cont empti ble litt le forc e; then fear Allah ; thus may ye
sho w you r gra tit ude. Reme mbe r tho u sai dst to the Fai thf ul: 'Is it not
enou gh for you that Allah shoul d help you with thre e thou sand ange ls
speci ally sent down? Yea, if ye remai n firm, and act arigh t, even if the
enemy shoul d rush here on you in hot haste , your Lord would help you
with five thousand angels making a terrific onslaught" (Qur'an 3:123–
