Shafi'i scholar Abu'l Hasan al-Mawardi (d. 10581, who echoes Muham-
mad's instruct ions to invite the unbeliever s to accept Islam or fight them
if they refuse, also agrees:

Proof that none of this is merely of historical interest is another Shafi'i
manual of Islami c law that was certi fied in 1991 by the highes t autho r-
ityinSunni Islam , Cair o's AI-Azha r Unive rsity. The manua l, Umdat
al- Salik(available in English asReliance of theTraveler),was declared to
conf orm "to the pract ice and fait h of the orth odox Sunni commu nity ."'
