I;

T is NO NEWS to writers and readers of history
.that even though a title page bears the name
of a single author, the work is inherently collaborative. This
study is no different, for whatever the old cliche about "too
many cooks," a history is much richer fare for the collabora
tion. Since this is my first work, I want to thank specifically
all those who have assisted me and upon whom I am likely
to rely again.
My thanks, first, to the archivists and manuscript librarians
whose help was crucial, to the staffs of the National Archives
of the United States; the Manuscript Division of the Library
of Congress; the Western Historical Manuscript Collection,
University of Missouri Library; the Manuscripts Division, Uni
versity of Virginia Library; the Southern Historical Collection,
the University of North Carolina Library, Chapel Hill; and
the Division of Archives and Manuscripts, the State Historical
Society of Wisconsin. I particularly want to thank Mr. Sherrod
East, Mr. John E. Taylor, Mrs. Sarah D. Jackson, Mr. Milton
Chamberlain, and Mrs. Miriam J. Stockwell of the National
Archives for their invaluable assistance.
Of no less assistance were the staffs of the Ohio State
University Library; the Columbus Memorial Library, Pan
American Union; the University of North Carolina Library;
the Library of Congress; the Duke University Library, the
United States Military Academy Library; the Marine Corps
Museum, Quantico, Virginia; and the Historical Reference
Section, Headquarters Marine Corps.
I would also like to thank my adviser, Professor Harry L.
Coles of the Department of History, Ohio State University,
