W
hat has happened to
winter? We are just
over halfway
through the coldest
season of the year
and yet, despite some cold snaps,
there has been little snow over
much of the UK. Temperatures have
held up surprisingly well with a mild
December on average and
particularly high minimum
temperatures.
January has carried on in much
the same way, with Scotland
experiencing some remarkably mild
weather. Not only have
temperatures been unseasonably
high but, after a fairly wet start, this
month is also turning noticeably dry
and there is not much sign of
substantial rains in the near future.
The unseasonable weather is
thanks to dominant high pressure.
There is, however, some rain
sweeping through today on a brisk
and cold wind brought down by a
low-pressure system centred in the
Arctic. Tomorrow could be cold
enough for wintry showers of sleet
and snow in places but this will be a
brief interlude and as high pressure
returns it will start to cut off the
cold winds from the north. Frost and
fog will remain a constant threat
over much of the country, especially
in southern Britain.
This time in winter is also when
the daylight hours start to grow
noticeably longer and the pace of
extra light grows increasingly fast
day by day.
“It is imperceptible even as the
growth of a child, as you watch it
day by day, until the moment comes
when with a start of delighted
surprise we realise that we can stay
out of doors in a twilight lasting for
another quarter of a precious hour,”
Vita Sackville-West wrote.
Why then are January and
February usually the coldest times
of the year, despite the growing
hours of daylight? Like turning off a
central heating system at home, it
takes time for the seas around
Britain to lose their heat stored up
from the summer. But once the seas
are cool, the UK is left unprotected
from bitterly cold winds sweeping
our way.
