Whether the small, hand-picked
Chinese crowd will enjoy the cultural
reference is yet to be discovered, but the
news on Monday for the Beijing Winter
Olympics was that Jamaica’s four-man
bobsleigh team have qualified for the
forthcoming winter Games for the first
time in 24 years.
The Jamaican quartet have claimed
the 24th place in a 24-team field. Their
nation’s prowess in the event is most
warmly remembered for the team at the
1988 Calgary Olympics that crashed on
the ice in their final run and failed to fin-
ish but whose unlikely endeavours and
reggae soundtrack were preserved in
the film Cool Runnings.
This 2022 bobsleigh team is not quite
Cool Runnings: The Sequel because,
after 1988, Jamaica qualified teams for
three more Games, all of whom com-
pleted the course. However, after a 24-

disappointed how this news has been
annouced! It was agreed that
we would announce together with
@alpinef1team! No respect sorry! I
have refused the offer made to me in
Abu Dhabi for the 2022 season because
of a personal relationship and I was
right! To the enstone and Viry team I
will miss you.”
Later, speaking to L’Equipe, he said:
“The 2021 season was very
disruptive for me, in that I felt that the
old ones [at the team] had to go. I accept
the change because we don’t have to do
F1 always the same way. We can do it
differently, and that is what throughout
the last year has been done. But it
became too complicated.
“I was no longer involved in the deci-
sions. Sometimes I did not even share in
them at all but I had to continue to put
out the official word. Even as a member
of the board of directors, I discovered
certain decisions at the last minute.
One might not be able to be heard, but
at least one should be warned in time.
It’s a question of respect. Relations
became more and more complicated. I
felt that there was a lot of jealousy.”
Meanwhile, Mercedes have an-
nounced that their 2022 car will be
unveiled on February 18. The team,
who won a record eighth consecutive
constructors’ title last season, said that
a digital launch event would be held
from Silverstone with drivers and the
management team in attendance.
The Mercedes launch comes the
week before the first three-day pre-
season test in Barcelona, which runs
from February 23.

year wait, this is quite the Olympic
comeback.
There is also a royal connection for
this team. A Zoom video two years ago
caused online excitement when in a clip
featuring the pilot of the Jamaican bob,
Lance Corporal Shanwayne Stephens,
the Queen chuckled.
In 2020, the Queen hosted a video
call with members of the armed forces
from around the world. Lance Corporal
Stephens was on the call and when he
was asked how he was training for the
Olympics during lockdown, he replied
that he had been pushing a car around
the streets of Peterborough. This
revelation produced said chuckle.
“Well I suppose that’s one way to
train,” the Queen replied, the only
words that we have on record from her
on the subject of bobsleigh.
The four-man team is not the only
Jamaican bobsleigh to qualify for these
Games. With success in the qualifica-
tion races, they have qualified for three

events. Besides the four-man bob, they
have a two-man team and also a
woman in the monobob.
They have managed to get there only
after the Jamaican Bobsleigh and Skel-
eton Federation launched a crowd-
funding page last year to raise money to
get their teams the equipment and trav-
el required to get to the Games.
The four-man and the two-man
bobsleighs are significantly more
expensive than the monobob, which is a
female-only discipline.
The monobob has particular appeal
because it is a more democratic event
that is open to a wider group of
competitors. Not only are the costs
lower, but the sleds all come from the
same manufacturer, therefore stripping
the better-funded nations of the
opportunity to gain technological
advances with the equipment.
At last year’s World Cup, Jamaica
and Brazil both won medals in
the monobob.

UK Athletics searching for
new CEO after Tokyo woe
Athletics UK Athletics has launched a
search for a new chief executive after
confirming that the interim CEO
Mark Munro will not apply for the
role. He has been in the job since
Joanna Coates resigned in October,
soon after the exit of the performance
director Sara Symington after a
disappointing Tokyo Olympics.
Munro will return to his former job
as development director and will also
have an expanded role to support the
new chief executive.

Lancashire give new deals
to four young prospects
Cricket Lancashire have tied George
Balderson, 21, Tom Hartley, 23,
George Lavelle, 21, and Jack Morley,
20, to new deals until the end of 2024.
Left-arm spinner Hartley has made
39 Lancashire appearances and has
become a key weapon in Twenty20
cricket, while Balderson — the former
England Under-19 captain who scored
a first-class 77 at Nottinghamshire in
September — Lavelle and Morley
were regulars during the side’s 2021
Royal London Cup campaign.

Alain Prost has accused Alpine of
having “no respect” and criticised the
“jealousy” of the chief executive
Laurent Rossi after leaving his job as a
consultant with the Formula One team.
Prost, the four-times world cham-
pion, had been a special adviser to
the French racing team, formerly
known as Renault, since 2017. He also
sat on the board of directors and was a
non-executive director but will not
be returning to the paddock after
seemingly falling out with Rossi.
“Rossi’s desire is to be alone, not to be
polluted by anyone,” Prost told the
French newspaper L’Equipe. “He told
me he no longer needed advice. There
is a real desire to put a lot of people on
the sidelines.”
Renault were rebranded as Alpine,
the company’s niche sportscar brand,
last season and an overhaul of the
management team followed. Cyril
Abiteboul left as team principal shortly
before the start of the 2021 season and
Rossi was appointed chief executive.
Rossi has since overseen his own
shake-up, with the departure of the
executive director, Marcin Budkowski,
announced last week. Otmar Szafnau-
er, the former Aston Martin team prin-
cipal, is widely tipped to replace him.
Now Prost has left, which he said in a
social media post was his decision,
contradicting reports that Alpine had
dispensed of his services.
