be the most likely destination for Pog-
ba, who cost United £89 million when
he returned to the club from Juventus
six years ago.
Rangnick has earmarked United’s FA
Cup fourth-round tie against Middles-
brough at Old Trafford on February 4
as a potential comeback date for the
former Juventus man.
“Paul Pogba had his first day of train-

ing with the whole group [on Monday]
and, in the first training session, he
showed what kind of extraordinary
player he could be,” Rangnick said.
“He will not be available for the two
games this week but hopefully after the
break, when we have the cup game
against Middlesbrough and the away
game at Burnley, I think he could be
an option.”

Everton turn

to Ferguson

once again

Paul Joyce

Duncan Ferguson has been handed the
opportunity to stake his claim to be
Everton’s next manager after being
placed in caretaker charge.
Ferguson, 50, will lead Everton
against Aston Villa on Saturday, with
the club stating he will be at the helm
for “upcoming games” while the search
for Rafa Benítez’s replacement takes
place. The move brings breathing space
for the club’s hierarchy after an initial
approach for Roberto Martínez, the
Belgium manager, was blocked, but also
presents Ferguson with am incentive.
After the weekend there is a break in
the Premier League season before
Everton host Brentford in the FA Cup
on February 5. That is followed by a trip
to Newcastle United three days later.
It will be the second time that Fergus-
on has stepped into the breach, having
been caretaker in December 2019 when
he was unbeaten in three league games
— beating Chelsea 3-1 and drawing
with Manchester United and Arsenal.
Everton are, however, proceeding
with talks with Frank Lampard, the
former Chelsea manager, and there is
interest in Wayne Rooney, who has
impressed at Derby County while
contending with administration.
There has been contact with
Rooney’s representatives, but Derby’s
administrators have said they have not
received a formal approach.
Niko Kovac, who has just left
Monaco, is also under consideration.

Ralf Rangnick believes that Paul Pogba
will be partly motivated by a desire to
impress other clubs who want to sign
him on a free transfer when he returns
to action for Manchester United next
month.
Pogba, 28, returned to training on
Monday for the first time since he
injured his thigh in November and is
expected to be considered for selection
in two weeks’ time.
Throughout the whole of last year,
Pogba and his representatives gave no
suggestion that he wanted to remain at
the club beyond the end of the season,
so he is expected to leave when
his contract expires on July 1.
The idea that Pogba will be
playing for a contract elsewhere
will not deter Rangnick from
picking the World Cup winner.
“Why shouldn’t [I play] Paul
Pogba now after 2½ months of
injury?” Rangnick, the interim
manager, said. “He is fully fit again
and he also wants to show up. He
wants to show the fans of Manches-
ter United, the board, the whole
world what kind of player he can be
and even if it’s only to show enough
for a new contract elsewhere, he will
be highly motivated to do that and
why should I then not play him?
“My contract as a manager is also
expiring in the summer. We have the
same goal. We have the same ambition
to be as successful as we can possibly be
in the next three or four months.”
Pogba is a talented player but the
admission from Rangnick that the
midfielder is partly motivated by a need

to impress any would-be suitors will
annoy those fans who think that he has
taken United for a ride over the past
couple of years.
United have made repeated attempts
to get Pogba to sign a new contract, but
he has been reluctant to come to the
table and it looks almost certain that he
will leave on a free transfer.

do, we do better...

Rangnick has now decided to ditch his
4-2-2-2 system and United will play
4-3-3 for the rest of the campaign.
“In a 4-3-3 Jadon is a player for either
the left or right wing,” Rangnick said. “I
think he would prefer to play on the left,
because then he can switch inside and
shoot on goal with his strong right foot.”
Anthony Martial could feature in
tonight’s match away to Brentford,

Martial could return after ‘refusing’ to be on bench

despite his dispute with Rangnick. The
forward, 26, held talks with the manag-
er on Sunday after denying his asser-
tion that he had refused to be on the
bench for the draw with Aston Villa on
Saturday. However, Rangnick appears
to be standing by his claim, saying: “I
nominated him before the game and he
was not part of the group. You can draw
your own conclusions out of that.”

Leeds United set to make
higher bid for Aaronson
Leeds United have had a £15 million bid
for the Red Bull Salzburg forward
Brenden Aaronson turned down but
are expected to return with an
improved offer (Martin Hardy writes).
Marcelo Bielsa is keen to land the
versatile 21-year-old, who can play as a
winger or as a centre forward and has
scored three times this season for his
club.
Leeds will have to increase their fee
to about £20 million to land Aaronson,
who is a US international.
