Forest Green A Mansfield A
Abandoned due to fog

Perhaps the most troubling sight for
any Chelsea fan who followed Thomas
Tuchel’s team to the south coast
would not have been the sloppiness of
their performance, or the continued
ineffectiveness of their star striker, but
the impassive air of their head coach.
Tuchel is one of the more animated
figures in the Premier League, the
perfectionist who could find fault in the
finest of performances, but his usual
touchline energy was absent last night
as he slumped to the bench as his team
slipped up for the ninth time in 13
games.
Emotionless and, quite possibly,
exhausted, Tuchel expressed relief at
having four days off before their next
fixture as he sprinkled a sweet layer
over an unconvincing performance.
With a surname like his, Graham
Potter suggested that he could never be
regarded as a “sexy” name in manage-
ment but any Premier League side
would be attracted to what he has
achieved with Brighton & Hove
Albion. A few too many draws, maybe,
but this was another encouraging
display and a deserved point for Potter,
thanks to Adam Webster’s thunderous
headed equaliser after Hakim Ziyech’s
opener. The result pulls Tuchel’s team
further into a top-four battle.
Days off, Tuchel said, were needed
“so, so badly” after three away games in
seven days. “You can say its an excuse
or whatever but look at our schedule,”
the German said. “We arrive in a game
where we don’t reach our full potential.
OK, welcome to reality.
“The noise at the end was like we lost
the game and can very easily give you
the impression we lost, but we didn’t.”
History suggested this was a game
Chelsea would welcome with the
pressure on, having lost away to
Manchester City on Saturday and
allowed their lead at the top of the table
to reach, according to Tuchel, an
“unacceptable” 13 points. Chelsea had

tey, the lively full back signed from
Chelsea 18 months ago, who had
suffered a groin injury. There appeared
to be no signs of damage as he raced
down the right wing, drawing audible
intakes of breath from the home fans
after accelerating past Mount, Kanté
and Silva with such ferocious speed.
Lamptey’s departure was really about
opportunity, given the number of

academy products in front of him,
including Callum Hudson-Odoi, who
was back in the starting line-up for a
league game for the first time since the
reverse fixture. Hudson-Odoi had been
given the chance to extend Chelsea’s
lead moments before half-time, played
in by Romelu Lukaku, but he blazed
wildly over the crossbar.
Lukaku had another off night in

never lost to Brighton in the league,
their only defeat coming 89 years ago in
the FA Cup, but the record books fail to
represent the balance of competition
and, in recent meetings, Brighton
were far from inferior.
And so the trend con-
tinued, as Potter’s team
controlled possession for
large parts, played
the more aesthetically
pleasing football and
generated greater chan-
ces, only to be left ruing
their misses. “Sometimes
the football gods are with
you and sometimes they’re
not but we gave ourselves a
chance,” Potter, the Brighton head
coach, said.
Tuchel had opted for a 4-2-2-2
formation, the system trialled in the
Carabao Cup semi-final victories over

Tuchel turns from magician to

Tottenham Hotspur and, incidentally,
deployed by Frank Lampard, his prede-
cessor, at the Amex Stadium two years
ago.
Judging by Tuchel’s demeanour on
the touchline, the way it was being
executed was far from his vision. Chel-
sea’s players were careless in posses-
sion, with Rüdiger, Jorginho and Mason
Mount among those guilty of misplac-
ing passes in the opening stages. Tuchel
threw his hands in the air and glared at
the coaches sitting behind him.
César Azpilicueta had set the tone
with a weak clearance that almost
proved damaging after only 136
seconds. Luckily for the Chelsea cap-
tain, Jakub Moder dragged an effort
wide after slick interplay involving
Pascal Gross and Danny Welbeck.
Chelsea knew of Brighton’s — and
Welbeck’s — danger having fallen to a
stoppage-time equaliser by the 31-year-
old former Manchester United striker
at Stamford Bridge three weeks earlier.
Welbeck threatened to put his name on
the scoresheet much earlier this time
but struggled to test the Chelsea goal-
keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Gross was the creator-in-chief, play-
ing a delicious ball between Rüdiger
and Thiago Silva that Welbeck was
unable to reach before looping a cute
pass over the Chelsea defence that left
Azpilicueta stretching. Kepa, standing
in for Édouard Mendy, who is at the
Africa Cup of Nations, began to close
but paused and was fortunate to go
unpunished when Welbeck failed to
connect after 27 minutes.
Ziyech gave Chelsea the lead
a minute later with a lethal
strike from the edge of the
area, hit with the kind
of frustration that
reflected a half in which
Chelsea had been
second best. N’Golo
Kanté and Ziyech had
traded passes on the edge
of the area and, when
Alexis Mac Allister failed to
close down the Morocco attacker,
he wound up his left leg with a shot that
Robert Sánchez, the Brighton goal-
keeper, could not contain.
One of three changes Potter had
made was reintroducing Tariq Lamp-

Ziyech spat with

Lukaku is ‘normal’

O

n a night when Thomas
Tuchel tinkered with his
attack in search of the
right formula, the unexpected
result was a dispute between his
forwards Hakim Ziyech, left, and
Romelu Lukaku.
Despite Ziyech giving Chelsea
the lead, the Morocco forward
had words with Lukaku as the
pair left the pitch at half-time.
Tuchel insisted he had no issue
with their spat, saying: “It’s
normal that they’re not happy. In
the reaction of the goal, you can
see that we are tired. We are
relieved but there is no joy.”
