Editor’s letter
As we know from old Erwin Schrödinger’s much put-
upon moggy, lock a cat in a box and it is simultaneously
a superposition of three states: alive, dead and, as the
late, great Terry Pratchett put it, ‘bloody furious’. During
the uncertainty of current pandemic, every future event
is locked in that same box. With a now presumably quite
musky-smelling feline.
Given I usually write these words a few weeks in
advance, this makes for quite a difficult task. All I can say for
sure is we had a fantastic new year with family and friends
and tearfully sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ under our breath to an
empty room. The Consumer Electronics Show was a
riotous in-person event in Vegas and a series of Zoom calls
populated by dressing-gown wearing journos.
Fortunately, the one thing we can count on is that it’s
been a bumper month for tech releases. And this issue is
jam-packed full of them. First up, we have a cornucopia of
next-gen home-cinema sound setups, from monolithic
surround systems to 3D audio headphones. We also offer
up the most innovative handheld consoles you can buy, the
latest top-quality affordable phones and review the shining
star of smart displays: Amazon’s new Echo Show 15.
