52 T3 FEBRUARY 2022
Game on the go
Let’s be honest, the Steam Deck is the dream console. A Switch-style handheld from
Valve with the power to play triple-A games, dock with your TV as a gaming PC, and let
you use analogue sticks or plug in a keyboard and mouse. It’s a little weighty at 669g
- okay, a lot weighty, as the Switch is 297g – but the Steam Deck has a 7-inch touch
screen and comes in three different sizes, with the top two models having an SSD. All
you need to do is sign in and play. If you’ve spent the last decade amassing a bigger
Steam library than is possible to play in a lifetime, this will happily help you make a
dent. Did we do a deal with the devil without noticing?
Available from February 2022; from £349, steamdeck.com
Some might have been disappointed that the first upgrade to the Switch in four
years is somewhat iterative but seeing the Switch OLED screen in action should be
enough to sway even owners of the original. The OLED model comes in both white
and neon colourways and is all about that display, which is now 7 inches instead of
6.2 and nearly bezel-less. OLED means a significantly sharper image if you want
Metroid Dread or Animal Crossing to shine like they should, and the viewing angle
has been improved too. There’s no difference in processor but for handheld gamers,
this is too pretty to pass up.
