governments at theend of the
lastcentury.
The flawhas beencalledthe
Y2K22bug –arefere nce to the
year 20 22,and anod to how
theMillennium bugwas also
known(Y2K).
It appeared in Microsoft’s
Exch ange serv ers, whichis
used by businesses,and so
mostly affectedworkemails.
The problemstemmed from

Microsoft’s policy of naming
its malware-scanningupdates
with th eyear, monthand
date,beforeanotherfour-digit
number.This means its
10-digit update number for
1January 2022 was

followed by 0001.
Howeve r, Microsoft’ssystem

of 31 (or2,147,483,648)and
wasthereforeunable to cope
with th enumber2201010 001
(or2,201,010,001).
Microsoft said this caused
the“malwareenginetocrash,
resultinginmessagesbeing
stuckint ransport qu eues”.
It addedthatthe problem
wasmerelya“datecheck
failur e”,and didn’t affectthe
malwarescanning.
