apples. We bring dozens home for ourselves and friends to enjoy and make pies
with the leftovers. On the way to the orchard, we stop at a Renaissance fair, eat
turkey legs with our hands, ravaging them Henry VIII–style. Our kids know
these traditions, and they’re an important part of our lives and memories. They
make us happy.

Everyone loves their foodie customs at holidays, birthdays, or big-game days.
But let’s start to think of family food traditions not as something you do just five
or six times a year, but more regularly. For example, we have Sunday meals after
we worship, and it’s the one time of the week that we all get together (which is
even more meaningful as the kids have moved on with their lives). A family
feast for you might happen the night before the first day of school; whenever
Grandma visits; or every Saturday morning, with a delicious frittata.
