One man in particular helped me understand the link between diet and health
destiny. He came in to the hospital with chest pain and major clogs in his
arteries. We determined that he needed heart bypass surgery. This man, who was
in his fifties and weighed about 205 kilos, needed to get into the OR as soon as
possible.
The only problem? He weighed so much that we didn’t have a table that could
hold him for the necessary procedures. It’s not a good feeling to tell someone
that they should have surgery, but that you can’t do it. He was left with just one
shot: If he could lose enough weight so we could get him on the table, we could
operate.
When you have only one chance, you take it, and that’s what he did. He went
on an aggressive diet—really focusing on vegetables, lean meats, and olive oil
(sounds a lot like your FIXES, doesn’t it?). He lost 45 kilos in six months. Very
dramatic results, but he was motivated. He didn’t want to die, and that was his
alternative. Now weighing 160 kilos, he was eligible for the operation.
You might assume that he came in, we operated, and he went on his way
heart-healthily ever after.
That’s not how this story ends.
Here’s what happened: He came in to do the presurgery paperwork and I
asked him about his symptoms. “Well,” he said, “they sort of went away.” The
shortness of breath when he walked was gone. So were his other symptoms,
including the chest pain. We did a full workup and determined that he had not
only alleviated the symptoms associated with heart disease, but the clogging had
cleared up enough that he no longer needed the surgery at all.
Amazing.
By switching to superfoods and losing weight, he reduced his risk of heart
disease, and also a host of other problems. That’s because extra fat triggers a
cascade of chemical reactions that wreak havoc on many aspects of your system.
