THE CALORIE CALCULATION
You’re constantly burning calories in three different ways: 1. You burn 60
to 75 percent just to fuel your organs. 2. You burn another 15 to 30 percent
through your activity and movement. 3. You burn calories as you digest
food. Foods that take more energy to digest work in your favour, because
they burn themselves up with no extra work from you. Celery is the classic
example, as digesting it actually burns more calories than those green
stalks contain. Other foods burn a little extra as you digest, too, such as
nuts, eggs, salmon, and certain other fruits and vegetables. Consider it a bit
of a caloric discount. The calorie savings involving digestion is small, but
hey, every bit counts.
A whole egg has less than 100 calories. Try an egg or two soft-boiled for
five minutes for a slightly runny yolk, a minute less if you like them
runnier. For more on the health benefits of the incredible egg, see Your
Stealth Snack.
Maybe just picking up this book is your ready point, or maybe there was some
other trigger that inspired you to read this. Whatever it is, any aha moment
requires more than just feeling ready—you need to be prepared to take action.
After all, people don’t plan to fail, but they do fail to plan.
Use your emotions as the engine that will help you develop the strategies I
outline throughout the book and guide your choices going forward.
