fluttering in a cage. It’s desperate to push blood forward to the rest of the body,
but just can’t find the power. We need to act fast in those cases.
Though there are many different surgeries to address various heart conditions,
all of them share a similar mission: get the organ pumping strongly and
efficiently and make sure that all pathways to and from this vital engine are
cleared.
One of the reasons I fell in love with heart surgery is that it gives you
immediate feedback. Either it works or it doesn’t, right then and there. And I
have spent many, many, many days of my career looking into the hearts of men
and women whose life-thumpers were damaged by any number of things,
including troubled genes, cigarettes, inactivity, and poor diet. We identified the
problem, and we scheduled surgery to address it.
Whether you’re at risk of heart disease (the country’s number one killer)
because of genetics or lifestyle, or you just want to make sure your heart keeps
on working long and strong, you should take a keen interest in how food can
help. Because frankly, I don’t want to see you on that surgery table. I’d rather
you take matters into your own hands. Not with a scalpel, but with your fork and
knife.
The primary way you do it? With the X in my FIXES foods—Xtra fruits and
vegetables. The science is clear that a plant-based diet has an incredibly positive
effect on the health of the heart. Fortify your plate with nature’s best medicine,
and you’ll fortify your heart to carry you through life.
I can tell you the moment I knew we were in for a major change in our
understanding about food and heart disease. It was 1989, and I was a young
doctor attending a conference for the American Heart Association. Walking
through the halls, I saw one room that was absolutely packed—everyone wanted
to hear what the presenter was saying. This was the medical conference
equivalent of fans jamming into a small club to get a glimpse of the Beatles.
