Whether in the form of coffee, fizzy drinks, or well-marketed energy drinks,
there’s a problem with perpetually pumping caffeine into your system. Our
bodies only have so much energy throughout the day, and we’re designed to use
that energy at a steady pace until bedtime, at which point a restorative rest
reboots our system so we can do it all over again. So ingesting caffeine doesn’t
allow you to tap into a secret reserve of energy that you’d otherwise never feel;
it’s more like taking a withdrawal out on your day’s allotment. The more you
divest from it early, the less you’ll have available later.
When we try to pull a fast one on our energy system—say, by flooding our
bodies with a gas silo’s worth of coffee in the morning—we leave less for later.
Instead of having steady energy levels available, we take out a big amount early,
and that’s when we find ourselves craving those carbs and sugar and, you
guessed it, more caffeine throughout the day.
