brown rice syrup, and convenience foods with sugar on their ingredients lists. It
tends to sneak into foods you might not think of as sweet—check the label on
products like tomato sauce, yoghurt, even salsa. (Starting in July 2018, food
companies will be required to list added sugars on their labels, but until then,
you need to read the ingredients list to be sure. And remember that sugar
sometimes disguises itself on food labels—look out for syrups; words that end in
“-ose” like maltose, dextrose, sucrose; the word “cane”; and fruit juice. The
complete list of names is on Sugar Pseudonyms.) Cutting back and paying
attention to sneaky sugar sources will help you unlearn the craving and retrain
your taste buds. By the end of the process, you may be surprised to discover that
foods that you once found delicious now seem overly sweet. But a slice of
perfectly ripe mango? Sublime.
