Women should aim for 6 teaspoons of sugar a day or fewer, which is the
recommendation of the American Heart Association and the World Health
Organization. Men can go up to 9 teaspoons. But lots of people eat more
than double that—on average, women have 15 teaspoons a day, and men
have 20. Whoa!
When you return to enjoying treats, make sure you do it in modest amounts.
Also consider these ways of satisfying your sweet tooth with the least amount of
sugar damage:
Dark chocolate that’s at least 60 to 75% cacao. (It’s sweet, but bitter
enough that you won’t feel like eating a whole bar. If you’re tempted to
gobble more, start buying 80% cacao or even the pure source, cacao nibs.)
