Strategy 3: Customize Your “Rules”


We all have to live by somebody else’s rules when it comes to school, work, or
the community swimming pool. I just don’t think you should have to live by
anyone else’s food rules. Instead, I want you to come up with your own internal
monitoring system, because you know your individual pressure points best and
can invent unique ways to address them. These solutions become your
nutritional constitution, guiding you when it’s time to make decisions.
Here are some examples that work for me. Borrow anything that seems
helpful, or get inspired to write your own.


I   have    a   soft    spot    for sweet   spots.  Give    me  some    chocolate   ice cream,  and
I’m like a kid in, well, an ice-cream store. I know better, but it’s not as if I
have a will of steel. So I’ve created two main principles that I live by
when it comes to dessert: One, I don’t eat it at home. We don’t keep
desserts around, so I just don’t have them. And two, if we’re eating out as
a family, we may order one special dish to share, and we’ll each have one
