232 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD j
"Some of them gathered in the mosque one day and the Messenger of God
(SAAS) saw them talking among themselves, sitting together and speaking in
low voices. The Messenger of God (SAAS) ordered that they be removed from
the mosque and they were, forcibly.
"Abn Ayyiib went up to 'Amr h. Qays, one of the Bana al-Najja, who had
been the guardian of their gods in the pre-Islamic era, took him by the foot and
pulled him until he had got him outside, while the other man said, 'God damn!
Would you evict me, Abii Ayyiib, from the date shed of the Bann Thaclaha?'
"Abii Ayyab then went up to &fiC b. Wadi'a al-Najj~ and grabbed him by
the cloak, pulled at him hard, slapped his face and threw him out of the mosque,
saying, 'Yekh! You dirty hypocrite!'
"'Umaa b. Hazm seized Zayd h. CAmr, who had a long beard, and pulled hi
along by it until he had evicted him from the mosque. 'Umara then clenched his
fists and hit him with them hard in his chest, knocking him down. Zayd com-
plained, "Umzra, you've grazed me!' At this Wmaa replied, 'Clear off with you,
hypocrite! What God has in store for you is far worse! Don't ever come near the
mosque of the Messenger of God (SAAS) again!'
"Abii Muhammad Mascod b. Aws b. Zayd b. Asram b. Zayd h. Tha'laba b.
Ghanm b. Malik b. al-Najjar, who fought at Badr, went up to Qays b. 'Amr h.
Sahl, who was just a lad, the only youth among the hypocrites. Abii Muhammad
pushed Qays by the back of his neck till he had evicted him.
"One of the Bana Khudra approached a man called al-Harith b. 'Amr who
wore his hair thick, seized him by it and pulled hi violently across the ground
until he had evicted him. At this the hypocrite yelled, 'You're being very rough,
Aha al-Harith!' 'You deserve it,' he was told, 'you enemy of God you, for what
has been revealed about you. Don't you come near the mosque of the Messenger
of God (SAAS) again; you're filth!'
"A man of the Banii 'Amr b. 'Awf went for the previous man's brother, Zuway
b. al-Herith and forcibly evicted him, expressing his disgust for him and saying,
'Satan and his work have charge of you!"'
Ibn Ishaq then referred to the passages in sdirat al-Baqara (Qur'an, 11) and in
sarat al-Tmba (Qur'm, IX) that refer to the hypocrites and offered full and
effective explanations of these. God bless him!
An Account of thejrst military expedition, that of al-Abw2, also
called Waddzn, and thejrst of the delegations sent.

al-H~rith, as will be explained regarding the military expeditions.
Al-Bukhari's text reads as follows: Book of Nie M~litay Exfeditions. Ibn Ishaq
stated, "The first battle fought by the Messenger of God (SAAS) was that of
al-Ahwa', followed by that of Buwq, followed by that of al-'Ushayra."
