comrade and carried him back to their side. May God be pleased with him."It is established in both ~ahih collections from a hadith of Aba Mijlaz, from Qays
b. Wbad, that Aha Dharr used to swear on oath that this verse, L'These two are
adversaries who dispute about their Lord" (serat al-Hun; XXII, v.19) was
revealed about Hamza and his opponent and about Wtba and his, referring to
their coming forth at Badr.
This is the wording al-Bukhai gives in explaining this verse.
Al-Bukhm stated, "Hajjaj b. Minhl related to us, quoting d-Mu'tamir b.
Sulaymm, who said, 'I heard my father say that Aba Mijlaz related to him, from
Qays b. Wbd, who quoted 'Mi b. Abn '@&b as having said, "I will be the first
person who kneels before the All-Merciful one, Almighty and Glorious is He,
among the adversaries on Judgement Day."'
"Qays stated, 'And it was about them that the verse was revealed, "These two
are adversaries who dispute about their Lord."' He went on, 'This referred to
those who stood forth to do battle at Badr - 'Ali and Hamza, Wbayda and
Shayba b. Rabi'a, and 'Utba b. Rabi'a and d-Walid b. 'Utba."'
Al-Bukhwi done gives this.
We have discussed this at sufficient length in our Tafsir (Exegesrs); and to God
be all praise and credit.
Al-Umawi stated, "Mu%wiya b. 'Amr related to us, from Aba Ishaq, from Ibn
al-Mubarak, from Ismaql b. Aba Khalid, from 'Abd Alhh alBahiyy, who said,
'Wtba, Shayba and al-Walid, stood forth to do battle and Hamza, 'Ubayda and
'Ah went out to face them. The Quraysh champions said, "Speak, so we may
know you." Hamza replied, "I am Asad Allah, 'God's lion', and the lion of the
Messenger of God; I am Hamza, son of 'Abd al-Mugalib." They responded, "A
worthy peer." 'Ali then said, "I am 'Abd Allah, 'God's slave', and the brother of
the Messenger of God." Wbayda said, "I am he who is among the allies." Each
then engaged in man-to-man conflict, and God killed them."'
Hind spoke the following on that subject,"Eyes of mine, make copious tears flow down for the
best of heroes who did not turn aside.
His people called out to him on the morning when the
Bana &him and the Banii al-Mugalib did battle,
Making hi taste the sharpness of their swords, raising
hi aloft even after he had been destroyed."This was why Hind swore she would eat Hamza's liver.
The Wbayda referred to here was the son of al-H*th b. al-Muctalib b. 'Abd
Md. They carried him to the Messenger of God (SAAS), and placed him on
a bed next to where he stood. The Messenger of God (SAAS) then honoured
him by allowing his cheek to rest on his foot.
