38 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD

b. Jahsb b. Ri$b, Wtba b. Ghazwiin, al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwa, Mus'ab b.
Wmayr, Suwaybir h. Sa'd, Tulayb b. Wmayr, 'Abd al-Rahan b. 'Awf,
al-Miqdad b. 'Amr, 'Abd Allah b. Mastiid, Abn Salama b. 'Abd al-Asad and his
wife Umm Salama, daughter of Abn Umayya b. al-Mughira, and Shammas b.
Wthman.
Also there were Salama b. Hishm and 'Ayysh b. Abii Rabi'a who were
imprisoned in Mecca until after the battles of Badr, Uhud and al-khandaq.
There is some dispute over 'Ammar b. Ysir, as to whether or not he ever
went to Abyssinia.
There also returned Mu'attib b. 'Awf, Wthman b. Maz'nn, his son al-Sitlib,
along with his two brothers Qudma and 'Abd All&, both sons of Mq'iin. Then
there were Khunays b. Hudhafa and Hishm h. &-'AS b. W2'il, the latter being
imprisoned in Mecca until after the battle of al-khandaq. 'Amir h. Rabi'a and his
wife Layla, daughter of Abii vathma, also returned, as did 'Abd Allah b.
Makhrama.
'Abd Uh h. Suhayl b. 'Amr also returned, but he was imprisoned until the
battle of Badr, when he joined the Muslims and fought on their side.
Also Abn Sabra b. Aba Ruhm returned, along with his wife Umm Kulthiim,
daughter of Suhayl. As did al-Sakrm b. 'Amr b. 'Abd Shams and his wife Sawda,
daughter of Zam'a. He died in Mecca before the migration to Medina and the
Messenger of God (SAAS), thereafter married his widow.
Sa'd b. Khawla, Abii Wbayda b. al-Jarr*, 'Amr b. al-Hanth b. Zuhayr,
Suhayl b. Bayda' and 'Amr b. Abn Sarh also returned.
They totalled 33 men; may God be pleased with them!

Al-Bukh~ri stated, '"A'isha reported that the Messenger of God (SAAS) said, 'I
was given a vision of your abode in exile, a place of date-palms between two
tracts of black stones.'"
Some (of those who had returned from Abyssinia) then migrated to Medina,
while the rest of those who had remained in Abyssinia did so as well.
And there is a report to this effect from Aba Moss and Asma', God be pleased
with them both, from the Prophet (SAAS).
Already mentioned above is the account of Abii Masa, that being in both jahih
collections. The account of Asmx', daughter of Wmays, will come later, if God wills
it, and in Hi is d trust. Her story relates to what happened after the battle of
Khaybar, when the latecomers from among the emigrants to Abyssinia arrived.
Al-Bukhari stated, "Yahya b. Hammad related to us, quoting Abn 'Awana,
from Sulaymm b. Ibrahim, from 'Alqama, from 'Abd Allah, who said, 'We used
to greet the Prophet (SAAS), while he prayed, and he would reply to us. But
when we came back from the land of the Negus we would greet him the same
way, but he would not reply. So we said to him, "0 Messenger of God, when we
used to greet you, you would reply to us. But since our return from the land of
the Negus, you don't reply."'
