14 Habits of Highly Effective Disciples

(WallPaper) #1

Lesson 10: Service 117

  1. Divide the class into two groups. Ask Group 1 to read John 13:12–17
(silently) and Group 2 to read James 2:14–17 (silently). Ask a vol-
unteer from Group 1 to describe in his/her own words what took
place in the John passage. Ask the group, What do you think Jesus
was trying to teach his disciples? Ask a volunteer from Group 2 to
describe in his/her own words what is being said in the James pas-
sage. Ask the group, What is the point that James is trying to make
in this passage? Using the Teaching Guide, be prepared to add any
important information that might be overlooked. [Alternant Idea:

Encourage Application

  1. Read the following Case Study and answer the questions below:
One of the members of our class shares that she knows
of a family in her neighborhood whose father has lost his
job and his wife does not work. His company provided
three months of severance pay. They have two children: a
14-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl. Their family has no
connection to a local church. Some of you feel led to do
    something to help.

    • What do we do?

    • How do we go about it?

    • What is the best way to serve this family?

  2. Challenge the class to silently ref lect on the following questions
from the Study Guide. Choose one or two questions and ask for
    volunteers to share their answers.

    • What are some of the ways you can serve people outside of
      your immediate family?

    • What would be the equivalent of washing someone’s feet in
      the 21st Century?

    • What are some ways you can put others first?

    • What are some things your church/class could do to serve its
      community?

    • What are some ways you could express your faith in action
      this week while at work?
